Thinking about telling your partner about an unplanned pregnancy can cause serious nerves. Maybe your heart feels like it will stop, or your knees might shake when you tell him.

If you’re very nervous, you’re either concerned about how it will affect your relationship or how he might react. You’re not alone. We can help you work through these feelings.

Visit First Care Clinic to talk in person and receive confidential and compassionate support, as well as early pregnancy services and information.

To Tell Him or Not to Tell Him?

Some women might opt out and decide not to tell their partners about their pregnancies. Maybe they are just too nervous or feel like they don’t want any ties to their current or former partner.

However, we recommend that you tell your partner, except in cases of abuse. If your partner is abusive, it may be best not to tell him. Please contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline if you’re in need of support. They can help you find safety.

Breaking the News to Your Partner

If you do decide to tell him, verify your pregnancy first so you know you’re definitely pregnant with a progressing pregnancy. We offer free ultrasounds to confirm your pregnancy and collect important details. Schedule yours today.

Once you have these details, find a time when you both are comfortable, relaxed, and not in a hurry. Where do you talk best? If it’s at a restaurant or in a living room, aim to break the news in one of these places.

If you’re concerned about his reaction or would like to take some of the pressure off of yourself, you can bring a support person with you, tell your partner in a public setting, or call him over the phone.

Give him an evening to process. He might react differently than you hoped. Remember that this is an earth-shaking announcement for him, and his feelings could change the next morning after he has thought it through.

During the Following Days

Stay in contact with your partner as he works through his feelings. If you don’t live together, plan to meet and talk more. You can share information about your options with him and start looking ahead to the future.
