When is the best time to take a pregnancy test?

Taking a pregnancy test too early can result in a false-negative result. Pregnancy tests should be taken about a week after your missed period for more accurate results. This time allows for the hCG hormone, the hormone associated with pregnancy, to build up to a high enough level to be detected in a pregnancy test.

How does a pregnancy test work?

Pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence of the hCG hormone, which is the hormone associated with pregnancy. You will be asked to provide a urine sample in the clinic. A nurse will then perform a pregnancy test to detect levels of hCG to determine if you are pregnant.

If you take the test too early in your pregnancy, then the levels of hCG in your sample may not be high enough to be detected by a test. Pregnancy test results will be more accurate if you wait at least a week after a missed period.

If I am pregnant, what should I do next?

After a positive pregnancy test in our clinic, you should then get an ultrasound. Ultrasounds are used to confirm the pregnancy, determine how far along the pregnancy is, and ensure the pregnancy is viable.

First Care Clinic offers free ultrasounds to women who have had their pregnancy confirmed at a clinic. We can also provide verification of your pregnancy for health insurance purposes.
