The “womb” is another name for the uterus, a pear-shaped reproductive organ in the female body. It plays a fundamental role in menstruation, fertility, and pregnancy.

While there may not be damage or injury to the uterus after an abortion, it can happen. Here are some possible issues:.

Perforation of the Uterus

One of the risks of surgical abortion is perforation of the uterine wall, i.e., when a surgical tool pokes a hole in the uterus. This can typically heal on its own, but if it damages another organ or a blood vessel, a doctor may recommend another surgery to repair it.

Scar Tissue on the Uterine Wall

Rarely, a surgical abortion can cause scar tissue on the uterine wall. This is known as Asherman’s Syndrome, and it can lead to fertility issues and irregular or painful menstrual cycles.

Damage to the Cervix

During the procedure, surgical tools could tear the cervix (lower part of the uterus). If this happens, a provider can apply pressure to stop the bleeding and close the wound with stitches.

Infection

A risk of medical and surgical abortion, infections are generally caused by microorganisms like bacteria.

Having an existing STI or an incomplete abortion (when you do not fully expel the pregnancy tissue from the uterus) can also lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) if left untreated.

Signs of Complications After Abortion:

If you experience any of these signs or symptoms* or are concerned, contact your healthcare provider or visit the emergency room.

  • Fever, either high or lasting longer than 24 hours
  • Severe abdominal, pelvic, or back pain
  • Cramps lasting more than 48 hours
  • Pain that gets worse instead of better
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Lasting dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Difficulty breathing

*The above includes a combination of signs and symptoms that could indicate incomplete abortion or complications after either medical or surgical abortion.

While we do not provide or refer for abortions or provide emergency care, we urge you to stay vigilant after an abortion procedure and monitor your signs and symptoms to protect your long-term health. If anything seems off, visit a healthcare provider.
